Alcatraz

View of San Francisco from inside Alcatraz. The inmates could hear the sounds of the city especially during the evenings, and recall the sound of women laughing.

View north from the island. Guard residence left to deteriorate.

There's great vegetation and bird colonies on Alcatraz. The island is now considered a national park due to the bird popluations that come nest in the spring.

Dining hall. The kitchen was behind bars and each knife was traced on the wall where it was to hang, to ensure none were missing at the end of the meal.

Entrance to solitary confinement cell. These cells had no light which limited any inmate stimulation. One inmate retells that he would fill his time by throwing a button on the ground and go through the cell inch by inch to find it, then start over.
